ELLINGTON, CT — Firefighters were called to the trails behind the YMCA on Sunday after a horse became trapped in the mud when part of a bridge gave way beneath it, according to the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department.

The department said the horse was crossing the bridge when a section collapsed, sending the animal into the mud below. Firefighters responded and, with some encouragement and assistance, the horse was able to free itself.
