Ellington Honors Life Of Veteran Firefighter, EMT

ELLINGTON, CT — A longtime Ellington emergency services leader is being remembered after his death over the weekend.

Robert “Bob” Sandberg, who spent more than 65 years serving the community, died with his family by his side, according to posts from the Ellington Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department.

The ambulance corps said Sandberg served as chief from 1982 to 1994. The fire department said he was also a past president of the Ellington Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Both agencies described Sandberg as a fixture in local emergency service for decades. Over the years, he served as a firefighter, EMT, driver and captain, according to the departments.

The Ellington Volunteer Ambulance Corps said Sandberg “was the definition of commitment to community” and credited him with training members, answering calls and touching countless lives through his service.

The fire department said Sandberg “served Ellington honorably” and would be missed greatly.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family during this difficult time,” the ambulance corps wrote. “Rest in peace, Chief Sandberg. Thank you for a lifetime of service.”
