Ellington Public Works Leader Receives New England Award
An Ellington public works official was honored during a regional luncheon tied to National Public Works Week

ELLINGTON, CT — An Ellington public works official has received a regional honor for his work in the field.
Tom Modzelewski was recognized as this year’s “John Kiley” Member of the Year during the APWA New England Chapter’s annual National Public Works Week luncheon, according to the Town of Ellington.
The luncheon brought together public works professionals from across the region as part of National Public Works Week. The event recognized award winners, public works first responders and others who help maintain local communities.

The John Kiley Member of the Year award is given to a chapter member who reflects the character and dedication of John Kiley, according to the town. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to chapter members and the public works profession.
Those contributions support the chapter’s mission of helping people who operate, improve and maintain public works and infrastructure through advocacy, education and member engagement, according to the town.

“Tom embodies what it means to be a public works professional,” Patrick Yeo, chair of the Awards Committee, said in the town’s announcement. “He, along with those recognized before him, gives everything to his community with enthusiasm and an unwavering commitment.”
Yeo said Modzelewski has played a key role in the New England Chapter since joining the organization. His work has included serving as a committee member, committee chair, director, educator, mentor and supporter, according to the announcement.
“His attention to detail and genuine demeanor bring stability and confidence to everything he touches within the Chapter,” Yeo said. “We are incredibly fortunate to have such an engaged and effective leader among us.”
The town said Modzelewski also enjoys camping with his family and taking part in annual Doodlebug tractor pulls. He currently serves as president of the New England Doodlebug Association.
The town said Modzelewski is grateful for the support of his wife and family, noting that a career in public service often comes with unique demands.
Town officials congratulated Modzelewski on the honor and said his work reflects the service and commitment represented by the award.
