Somers Principal Resigns After Controversy

SOMERS, CT — Aaron Geddis has resigned as assistant principal of Somers High School, Superintendent Sam Galloway told families and staff in a letter Monday.

“The District has accepted the resignation,” Galloway wrote in the Sept. 28 letter. He did not give a reason for Geddis’ departure or say when the resignation took effect.

Geddis was hired this summer and introduced to the Board of Education on Aug. 24. Weeks later, videos of sermons he had delivered before joining the district circulated online, raising concerns about his comments on homosexuality, mental illness and people with special needs. Geddis was not working at the high school while the district reviewed the videos.

At the time, Galloway said neither he nor the hiring committee knew about the videos when the district offered Geddis the job. The school board also met privately with an attorney to discuss an employee’s First Amendment rights, though the district did not publicly identify the employee discussed in that session.

Monday’s resignation letter did not address the sermons or the district’s review. Galloway said Somers Public Schools would begin searching for a new assistant principal and share updates as the process moves forward.

“Our District’s strength lies in our dedicated staff, engaged families, and outstanding students,” he wrote.
