Canceled Art Celebration Resurrected Into Farmington Library Exhibit

The so-called 'Rain Check' art exhibit features more than 20 local artists after the Live Art Walk was canceled because of rain last month.

FARMINGTON, CT — A new community art exhibition is giving Farmington residents a chance to experience much of the artwork planned for the canceled Live Art Walk, transforming a rainout into a summer celebration of local artists.

"Rain Check: A Community Art Exhibit" opened with a public reception on June 20 at the Barney Library Hoppin Gallery, 71 Main St., and will remain on display through July 31.

Presented by the Farmington Cultural District and sponsored by the Farmington Community Chest, the exhibit features work by more than 20 artists who were originally scheduled to participate in the Farmington Live Art Walk, along with additional local Farmington artists.

Artwork is available for purchase throughout the exhibition.

The Live Art Walk had been planned as a Mother's Day weekend event along Farmington's historic Main Street, where more than 40 artists were expected to create paintings, sculptures, and other works in real time as part of a mile-long outdoor gallery featuring music and family activities.

Organizers canceled the event because of persistent rain.

Rather than abandoning the event, organizers partnered with participating artists and community organizations to create an indoor exhibition.

"This exhibit is really about community resilience and celebrating the incredible artists who were ready to share their work with the public," said Chelsea O'Donnell, organizer of the Farmington Live Art Walk. "The weather may have changed the format, but it didn't change the spirit of the event. We still wanted people to experience the creativity, warmth, and sense of connection that the Live Art Walk was meant to bring to Farmington."

Organizers said the exhibit preserves the Live Art Walk's mission of bringing people together through art, creativity, and community engagement while providing an opportunity for visitors to meet local artists and purchase their work.
