Popular Sandwich Shop Closes In Greenwich, Renowned NYC-Based Bakery Eyes Location

A signage application was reviewed this week by the Greenwich Architectural Review Committee's sign subcommittee.

GREENWICH, CT — Something Natural, the popular sandwich shop that operated at 189 Greenwich Ave. behind Saks Fifth Avenue for over nine years, has closed, and a new tenant is eyeing the prominent space.

New York City-based Magnolia Bakery is seeking to open a new location, according to a signage application reviewed this week by the Greenwich Architectural Review Committee’s sign subcommittee. The application included plans for three signs, including an awning sign.

The website for Magnolia Bakery notes a Greenwich location is opening in fall 2026. The company told Patch via email on Thursday it did not have an exact opening date for its Connecticut locations, which include a storefront in Darien at 1020 Boston Post Road.

Magnolia Bakery opened its first location in 1996 in the West Village of Manhattan on the corner of Bleecker Street and West 11th Street, and its offerings quickly gained popularity among locals and tourists. Magnolia is especially known for its decadent banana pudding, cakes and cupcakes.

The brand appeared on HBO's "Sex and the City" in 2000, and expanded with two more NYC shops and a Hollywood, Calif., location before the first international franchise bakery outpost opened in Dubai in 2010.

Magnolia began franchising locations in the U.S. in 2025 with the first location awarded to Holladay, Utah.

Along with multiple locations in NYC and single shops in Los Angeles, Chicago, Kentucky, and Utah, there are also bakeries in India, Kuwait, the Philippines, Qatar, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

Magnolia products and menu items are also available for shipping nationwide.

Something Natural opened in Greenwich in June 2017. The company was originally founded on the island of Nantucket in 1970, and is known for its oversized sandwiches with a variety of ingredient options, and its house-made Portuguese bread.

It was not immediately clear why the Greenwich location closed.

The location's website and phone number are both inoperable. Patch has reached out to the business email for more information.
