Groton Moves Forward With Fitch High Athletic Field Project

The project includes installing a high-performance synthetic surface, a 3,900-seat grandstand, a new scoreboard and more.

GROTON, CT — The Town of Groton is advancing plans for a major athletic facilities upgrade at Fitch High School following voter approval of a referendum last fall.

According to the Groton Parks & Recreation Department, Phase 1 of the Synthetic Multi-use Field + Facilities project will center on a new championship field featuring a high-performance synthetic surface. The project also includes a 3,900-seat grandstand, a new press box, and a modern scoreboard.

Additional upgrades call for a comprehensive track and field complex with an eight-lane track and dedicated areas for events such as high jump, pole vault, and discus. Plans also include new concessions, restrooms, ticket booths, improved lighting, and expanded parking with accessible spaces and a new “Athletic Gateway” entrance.

Town officials recently shortlisted three firms for the project, with interviews held in late March. After the presentations, the town expects to begin negotiations with the top-ranked firm.

A second phase, proposed by the Athletic Field Task Force, would transform the former Claude Chester Elementary School site into additional athletic space. Plans include two full-size multi-purpose fields, a grass youth field, and amenities such as restrooms, parking, and a gazebo for community events.
