HAMDEN, CT — The community is rallying around a Hamden family after a recent basement fire severely damaged their home and killed a family pet and injured two others.

The fire broke out on Grandview Avenue in Hamden on May 3.

Officials said two dogs and two cats were rescued from the home, and received medical attention from AMR and Hamden’s Animal Control officer at the scene.

The family escaped safely, but the fire claimed the life of their cat Leo, and two others, Evie and Ash, are still receiving veterinary care, according to a GoFundMe campaign.

The home has been deemed uninhabitable for an estimated 12 to 18 months.

“Everything in the home has been affected by smoke, soot, or water,” according to a post on the GoFundMe page. “While insurance will help, there are immediate needs and ongoing expenses while they are displaced.

“Right now, support will go toward veterinary care, boarding expenses, replacing basic pet items like collars, harnesses, leashes, and food bowls, as well as helping the family cover day to day costs like meals while staying in a hotel, clothing until insurance comes through, utilities, and other expenses that are currently unknown, but continue during this transition.”

In an update this week, friends said the insurance company has found the family a temporary house, and they are moving in this weekend after nearly a week in a hotel.

More than $16,000 has been raised in support of the family in the GoFundMe campaign (as of Wednesday night).
