Hugh A. Smith, 85, of Milford, passed away on August 8, 2026

There was little he would not do for another person, and his generosity, compassion, and willingness to help will be remembered by all

Hugh A. Smith, 85, of Milford, passed away on August 8, 2026. Born on October 21, 1940 in Blaine, Maine, he was the son of the late Deane and Clara Smith.

Hugh was a hardworking and devoted man who dedicated more than 50 years of his life to working as a steamfitter. He took great pride in his work and in providing for those he loved, but his greatest accomplishment was the family he built.

Hugh was a loving father and the rock of his family. He was the kind of person who never said no to someone in need. Even when helping others came at his own expense, Hugh never hesitated. There was little he would not do for another person, and his generosity, compassion, and willingness to help will be remembered by all who had known him.

He was a calm presence in every circumstance, carrying that same steadiness even through times of sickness.

Outside of work and family, Hugh was an avid athlete and bowler. He played college baseball and later shared his love of sports by teaching Little League. In high school, he held the free throw record for decades-a testament to his natural athleticism. He also taught diving at the Y, sharing his skills and enthusiasm with others. Hugh was a familiar face at the Milford AMF bowling alley, where he spent many enjoyable hours celebrating a strike. He also traveled throughout Connecticut to participate in amateur bowling tournaments, making memories and friendships along the way.
