Milford Opens Cooling Center Amid Heat Wave

The city is advising residents as dangerous levels of heat and humidity are forecast.

MILFORD, CT — The state is under its extreme hot weather protocol through July 5 due to dangerously hot and humid conditions.

Heat index values could reach 110 degrees.

The Milford Health Department has issued a health advisory with that in mind and opened cooling centers in the city.

The following cooling centers will be open:

  • Beth-El Center at 90 New Haven Ave. from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Milford Public Library at 57 New Haven Ave., Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Milford Senior Center at 9 Jepson Drive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The health department also provided advice to residents on protecting yourself during extreme heat.

  • Drink more water than usual—even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Avoid alcohol and sugary beverages.
  • Stay indoors in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
  • Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone with underlying medical conditions.
  • Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles—even for a few minutes.
  • Make sure pets have access to plenty of fresh water and shade.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms become severe.
