Gold Coin Scams Reported In New Canaan: Police

NEW CANAAN, CT — A number of "gold coin scams" have recently been reported in New Canaan, according to the New Canaan Police department.

In a Facebook post Thursday, police said the department has investigated multiple cases where residents were instructed to purchase gold coins to be picked up at their home or a public location after being contacted by someone pretending to be a federal agent or government official.

According to police, these scammers threaten victims and state they have committed a crime or have an arrest warrant and need to pay in order to resolve the issue.

"We want to remind residents that you can NEVER resolve any criminal matters or arrest warrants through a gold coin payment or wire transfer," police said on Facebook.

Police also noted scammers often use these tactics to scare victims and tell them not to tell anyone else what is going on.

"Stop and think before you start sharing personal information or commit to making a payment that you may never get back," police said. "Please contact New Canaan police about these calls and messages promptly. Speak to your friends and family members about these common scams."
