Friday, Mayor, Governor, State, Local, Congressional Leaders Join 1,300 Kids For LEAP's Read-In on the Green

The read-in has volunteers reading, discussing books with small groups of kids on the Green, with the goal of inspiring lifelong readers.

NEW HAVEN, CT — Friday, more than 1,300 New Haven children and youth will gather for the annual Read-In on the Green, a morning of community reading and read-alouds, hosted by the nonprofit organization Leadership, Education, and Athletics in Partnership, Inc.

The kids will be joined by volunteers, counselors, community leaders, and local, state, and federal elected leaders.

The event features volunteers who will read and discuss books with small groups of young people with the goal of inspiring them to explore the joys of reading.

Since 1992, LEAP has provided free, year-round programming for New Haven children and youth. It is also one of the city’s lead non-profit partners in the New Haven Tutoring Initiative, which provides free summer and after-school literacy and math tutoring to students.

One of LEAP’s signature summer events, the Read-In on the Green highlights the importance of literacy, learning, mentorship, and educational opportunity and aims to promote a lifelong love of reading among New Haven youth.

Welcoming remarks will be delivered by New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker and Gov. Ned Lamont. Also slated to celebrate the event are U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, State Representative Al Paolillo, State Representative Gary Winfield, and New Haven Public Schools' Superintendent Dr. Madeline Negron.

The event begins at 10 a.m.
