5 Things To Know In Newington: Berlin Turnpike Gym Hearing, Library Book Sale, Spooktober And More
Newington's TPZ hears a gym plan for the Berlin Turnpike, the Friends hold a fall book sale, and the library hosts Spooktober.
NEWINGTON, CT — Newington's Town Plan and Zoning Commission takes up a fitness center on the Berlin Turnpike, and the Friends of the Library fill the Senior and Disabled Center with books for their fall sale.
Here are five things to know about life around Newington this week:
1. Fitness Center Proposed On The Berlin Turnpike
When: Wednesday, Oct. 14, 7 p.m.
Where: Council Chambers, Room 103, Town Hall, 200 Garfield St.
What to know: The Town Plan and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on a special permit for a fitness facility at 2278 Berlin Turnpike (also known as 2272-2286 Berlin Turnpike) in the Business-Berlin Turnpike zone, according to the legal notice. The applicant is Parth Patel and the owner is Seva Sadan LLC. Materials are available in the Town Planner's office, Room 204.

2. Friends Of The Library Fall Book Sale
When: Preview Friday, Oct. 16, 4:30 to 8 p.m.; sale Saturday, Oct. 17, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; bag sale Sunday, Oct. 18, noon to 3 p.m.
Where: Newington Senior and Disabled Center, 120 Cedar St.
What to know: Thousands of hardcover, softcover, teen and children's books will be on sale, along with CDs, DVDs, videos and audiobooks, according to the town. Friday's preview costs $10 for anyone over 14; Saturday is free; on Sunday, a Friends green bag costs $12 to fill with books, with $10 refills.

3. Spooktober Crafts At The Library
When: Thursday, Oct. 15, 6 to 7 p.m.
Where: Lucy Robbins Welles Library, 100 Garfield St.
What to know: Kids in fifth grade and under can make spooky-season crafts, according to the library's post. Registration is required; the Friends of the Library sponsor it.

4. Food Scrap Recycling At The Transfer Station
When: Ongoing
Where: Newington Transfer Station, 2045 Main St.
What to know: Residents can drop food scraps in the blue containers at the transfer station, in paper or compostable bags or loose, according to the town. The scraps go to Quantum Organics, an anaerobic digester in Southington that makes renewable energy and compost. Food scraps make up about 22 percent of trash.

5. Nature Explorers For Kids 4 To 8
When: Friday, Oct. 16, 10:15 a.m.
Where: Lucy Robbins Welles Library, 100 Garfield St.
What to know: The library's outdoor child-and-parent class, inspired by the Wildwood Way curriculum, explores seasonal nature through songs, play and hands-on activities in local green spaces, according to the post. Registration is required.
