Connecting With Love: Messages From Those Who Have Passed - A Mediumship Demonstration

Stanley-Whitman House

Ye Olde Lebanon Towne Militia, Company 1775, camps on the historic grounds of the Stanley-Whitman House for a full afternoon of immersive Revolutionary War living history. The group portrays soldiers and civilians of Connecticut's Third Regiment, bringing both military and domestic life to the grounds: drills, inspections, beekeeping, a period surgeon, crime-and-punishment demonstrations, and hands-on musket drills for younger visitors. Farmington had its own men in that war: Bayze Wells, a Farmington sergeant whose journal of Continental Army service from 1775 to 1777 documents the same supply shortages, improvised rations, and winter hardships that the militia's interpreters bring to life on the grounds.
The encampment is free and open to the public. The historic house will be open for guided tours at regular admission rates. The Roots and Reflections painting exhibition by Rachael and John O'Shaughnessy is free to view in the Spear Classroom and Whitman Tavern, and the museum store will be open throughout the afternoon.

In March 1775, Farmington resident Martha Cowles publicly confessed to serving British tea in violation of the Continental Association, the colonial boycott of British goods adopted by the First Continental Congress in 1774. Her words survive in the pages of the Connecticut Courant. On June 20, you can meet her.
The Stanley-Whitman House LiberTea Party begins with traditional tea service in the Whitman Tavern: tea, scones, and seasonal fruit, poured in the spirit of resistance. Guests then move to the Speare Classroom, where co-chair Jane Dalal presents the story of Farmington on the eve of the Revolution and the political stakes of something as ordinary as a cup of tea. Alyce Barlowski follows as Martha Cowles, bringing to life the moment when one Farmington woman's domestic act became a public confession of political consequence.
The afternoon closes with a guided tour of the historic 17th- and 18th-century gardens led by Andrea Donald and Dooryard Garden Society volunteers, exploring the plants that sustained colonial households and how the disruptions of war, trade, and boycott reshaped what Farmington families grew, gathered, and ate. Historic house tours are available throughout the afternoon at regular admission rates.
Every dollar from ticket sales goes directly to the preservation and interpretation of the Stanley-Whitman House gardens and grounds. Garden Bed Sponsorships at $250 are also available; contact averzosa@stanleywhitman.org for details.
Tickets are limited to 40 attendees and are available online through Eventbrite or by check to the museum. Early registration is encouraged as this event sells out. Creative Writing and Memoir Writing Workshop Series Two creative writing workshops are offered this summer. The first will be for open forms and begin on July 6th. The second will focus on memoir writing and will start on July&nbsp;8th. They will both meet at Saint James Church, 1018 Farmington Avenue&nbsp; in West Hartford.&nbsp; The&nbsp;dates for open&nbsp;forms are: 7/6. 7/13, 7/20, 7/27, 8/3, and 8/10. These are all Mondays. The dates for the memoir workshops are: 7/8, 7/15, 7/22, 7/29, 8/5, and 8/12. These are&nbsp; Wednesdays. They will both meet from 7:00-8:30 p.m.. The cost is $240.00, and payment is for the series. Sign ups&nbsp;are on a first come first served basis. Registration is required.&nbsp; Writing instructor David Pontrelli is a&nbsp;&nbsp;graduate of Wesleyan University, a certified Connecticut English teacher, and a certified Amherst&nbsp;Writers&nbsp;and Artists&nbsp;workshop&nbsp;leader. HIs participants represent a wide range of ages and abilities, from inner-city children to adult professional&nbsp;writers. The&nbsp;workshops&nbsp;he leads&nbsp;stress participant safety and create an enhanced sense of community. He&nbsp;has been a featured reader at Art Works Gallery, the Hope Out Loud Peace and Arts Festival, and Word House.
