NORWALK, CT — Early voters may notice something interesting as they enter Norwalk City Hall this week: a friendly ghost encouraging them to cast their "boo-lot."

Any visitors to the building who travel further may also spot a pumpkin-headed man apologizing for having to assess them.

These displays are just a couple of the fun Halloween decorations now on display at City Hall in anticipation of an upcoming family event.

According to the city's Facebook page, a free children's trick-or-treat event will be held at the building Oct. 30.

During the event, children are encouraged to show up in costume, visit the various departments throughout City Hall and collect Halloween treats along the way.

City Hall staff have already begun setting up decorations on the doors and throughout the offices of their respective departments, which could be seen on display Tuesday morning.

Jenn McMurrer, the city's communications director, said this is the first year City Hall will host a trick-or-treat event and Mayor Barbara Smyth is excited to welcome children to the building for it.

"As a former teacher, the mayor wants to offer fun, free and safe options for children and their families during Halloween, but also throughout the year," McMurrer said in an email to Patch. "That's why we started the mayor's art contest and now the trick-or-treating at City Hall."

The event will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at City Hall, located at 125 East Avenue, according to the city.

While some departments have already started decorating, McMurrer said more will join in closer to the event.

"It's our first year doing this so we don't know what to expect," McMurrer said, "but we're hoping to have families come and enjoy music, some candy and lots of fun."

She also noted the Halloween celebration was inspired by the city's annual holiday door decorating contest, a favorite event around City Hall planned to return later this year.

"The employees get really into it and it adds a lot of cheer to the hallways for both employees and residents," McMurrer said, "so we will definitely be doing that again this year."
