Bristol Firefighter Passes Away Unexpectedly: FD
Condolences are pouring in among the emergency services community.
BRISTOL, CT — A local fire equipment technician, Jason "Jay" Kelly, passed away unexpectedly over the weekend, fire officials announced.
The Bristol Fire Department posted about Kelly’s off-duty death on Facebook on Saturday.
“Words cannot describe how much he is going to be missed,” the post says.

Kelly had been with the Bristol Fire Department for more than 20 years, according to the post.
“Jay was known and loved by many, and respected for his expertise throughout the fire service and beyond,” the post said. “We are proud to have called him our brother, and our friend.”

“We ask that you keep his beloved family in your thoughts in this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace Jay,” the department added.
Several area police, fire and emergency response organizations have expressed condolences.
The Bristol Police Department posted on its Facebook page that its staff is “heartbroken.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones, and our brothers and sisters at Bristol Fire Department,” Bristol police wrote. “The bond between police and fire is strong, and today we mourn together.”
The Southington Fire Department wrote, “Our condolences go out to the members and families of the Bristol Fire Department as they mourn the unexpected loss of Fire Equipment Technician Jason Kelly.”
As of Monday morning, more than 300 comments were on the original announcement, many focused on Kelly’s contributions and offering condolences.
Sharon Vermiglio Dina posted on Facebook, “This man was so kind to me and my friend when we visited the Bristol Fire Department to ask for advice on how to safely use a tool with a torch. He—and other members—took the time to help us that day….May he RIP.”
Another poster, Peter Kot, wrote, “Jay was committed to his profession and the City. He was a true gentleman. He will be sorely missed by many. He was taken too soon. Rest easy.”
