Stamford Man Charged In Scheme Involving Stolen U.S. Treasury Checks: Officials (patch.com) — Stamford residents are learning that a 23-year-old local man has been charged in a federal case alleging his role in a large scheme involving stolen and altered U.S. Treasury checks taken from the mail. Investigators say more than 100 checks worth several hundred thousand dollars were funneled through a co-conspirator's account, with the Stamford suspect allegedly helping recruit accounts, move the money, and flaunt large amounts of cash online. He is currently free on a $200,000 bond while the case proceeds.
   

2. New CEO Named At Stamford-Based Charter Oak Communities (patch.com) — Stamford readers will see a familiar name taking the helm at Charter Oak Communities, the agency that provides affordable housing for thousands of local families. Ben Barnes, a former top Stamford and state official, becomes CEO on Oct. 1, succeeding longtime leader Vin Tufo and pledging to expand the organization's impact on housing and neighborhood revitalization across the city.
   

3. Ex-Stamford Cop Found Not Guilty In Fatal Pedestrian Crash: Reports (patch.com) — Stamford residents are reacting after former city police officer Zachary Lockwood was acquitted in the 2023 patrol-car crash that killed community leader Rev. Tommie Jackson on Wire Mill Road. The case, moved to Milford for trial, highlighted dashcam evidence, Jackson's deep ties to Stamford churches and redevelopment efforts, and Lockwood's firing from the Stamford Police Department following the incident.
   

4. CT is losing salt marsh, but you can help! (wshu.org) — Right in Stamford's Boccuzzi Park, volunteers are fighting invasive reeds and cleaning up one of the city's last remaining salt marshes, which help reduce flooding and protect wildlife. Local nonprofit SoundWaters is leading hands-on projects that get residents and students into waders, cutting phragmites, picking up trash, and discovering a surprisingly wild habitat in their own backyard.
   

5. Stamford wants to lure grocery stores downtown with tax breaks (ctdatahaven.org) — Stamford officials are weighing tax breaks to lure full-service grocery stores to Downtown, the South End, and East Side, aiming to fix food-access gaps in the city's most populous neighborhoods. A proposed Urban Grocery Store Development District would offer property tax incentives while capping benefits to protect taxpayers, responding to supermarket closures and rapid population growth across Stamford.
