Trumbull Adds Pumpkin Drop-Off Pilot, Outlines Composting Options
A marked Transfer Station dumpster will accept pumpkins Nov. 2-20, with curbside leaf collection and backyard composting also options.
Trumbull is adding a pumpkin drop-off pilot program at the Transfer Station, according to a town announcement. Residents can put pumpkins in a clearly marked dumpster from Monday, Nov. 2, through Friday, Nov. 20.
After that period, pumpkins can go in the Transfer Station's organic brush pile along with hay bales and cornstalks. Residents can also set pumpkins out with their leaf piles for regular curbside leaf collection. No extra steps are necessary for that option, according to the town.
For backyard composting, the town recommends chopping pumpkins, removing the seeds and burying the material in a compost bin or pile. Cover the pumpkin material with 6 to 10 inches of soil.

To discourage unwanted animals, the town recommends securing trash, keeping grills clean and avoiding meat or oils in compost. The announcement also sets a condition for composting: “Please compost only pumpkins that are free of paint, glitter, stickers, or other synthetic decorations.”
