New 'Threads of Community' Mural Taking Shape in Vernon's Rockville Section

VERNON, CT — A colorful new mural is taking shape along East Main Street in Rockville as part of an effort to expand public art and arts activity in Vernon's historic downtown area.

The "Threads of Community" mural is a public art project sponsored by the Vernon Cultural District. The project is supported by the Connecticut Main Street Center, Sustainable Connecticut, Swiss Cleaners and Get Fresh Laundromat, Tri Towne Lube and Repair, as well as dozens of individual and business donors.

Heather Herindeen, of Ellington, was selected as the artist and she began working on the project earlier this month. Her brightly colored design is already drawing the attention of people passing along East Main Street.

Herindeen said the mural is not yet complete.

Organizers hope the mural will serve as a prominent introduction to Vernon’s historic downtown and the Vernon Cultural District for people entering the area.

The project is part of broader efforts to increase arts offerings and activity in Rockville and contribute to the vibrancy of the downtown district.
