Rockville High School Girls Lacrosse Coach, NCCC Girls Programs Again Team Up On A Trek To Fight Hunger

VERNON, CT — For the second straight year, Rockville High School girls lacrosse coach Charlie Chatterton, his Rams and other North Central Connecticut Conference programs teamed up on a Friday to fight food insecurity.

It was a new edition of the RHS-NCCC Girls Lacrosse Fill the Net to Fight Hunger event, during which Chatterton embarked on a 50-mile cycling trek from Canton High School to the Rockville High stadium with stops to Ellington High School, Somers High School, Suffield High School, Granby's Salmon Brook Park and Enfield along the way.

Chatterton passed the ball around at each location and then climbed back on his bike to head for the next location.

His wife, Carol, a teacher in the Vernon public school system, drove the chase car and collected donations along the way.

This year, there was a slight complication — the rear axle on his "new" bike broke in the Canton High Parking lot. He then walked about 8 miles while Carol raced home to get his old 1989 bike, on which he completed the final 42 miles.

In all, he raised more than $1,100 in donation, along with several bags of non-perishable food for area programs.

That's about 2,200 meals.

Donations can still be arranged through the Rockville High School athletic department.
