📰 News we're reading

1. Deceased Dog Found Discarded In Garbage Bag In Waterbury (nationaltoday.com) — A dead dog was found stuffed in a garbage bag along a Waterbury roadside, and police are now investigating whether cruelty or neglect was involved. The discovery, made Monday on Progress Lane by a sidewalk cleaner, has raised concerns about how animals are treated and disposed of locally. Officers and animal control confirmed the remains and are working to learn more.

2. Waterbury hydrant trouble at fire raises concerns about maintenance across Connecticut (middletownpress.com) — Waterbury officials are investigating why city fire hydrants, including on Bennett Avenue, had such low pressure that firefighters spent 20 minutes finding usable water during an April 7 house fire. Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo is leading a review of hydrant testing records and standards, while the mayor pushes for an action plan to fix aging pipes and prevent future failures.

3. Local Event: April 21 & 22: Give Local to Spotty Dog Rescue (patch.com) — Waterbury-area residents can support Spotty Dog Rescue during the Give Local Greater Waterbury & Litchfield Hills online fundraiser running April 21–22. Donations help cover medical care, food, and supplies for abused and abandoned dogs the all‑volunteer group places in permanent homes. You can give during the 36‑hour campaign or donate directly anytime online.

4. Owner of CT hospitals adding oversight following problems. What to know. (courant.com) — Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury stands out as Trinity Health of New England’s only Connecticut hospital currently operating in the black, even as the system posts a $102 million loss and adds new regional leadership. While most of the oversight concerns center on Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford, any major financial or leadership shifts at Trinity could eventually affect services, staffing, and care at Saint Mary’s.

5. Waterbury sexual assault convict gets 12 years after attempted boat escape (middletownpress.com) — A man whose sexual assault case began with a 2022 Waterbury police arrest has now been sentenced to 12 years in prison after skipping his earlier sentencing and being caught on a stranded sailboat near New Haven.
