Speed Cameras Coming To Windsor Locks

WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — Mobile speed cameras are expected to begin operating on Route 20 in Windsor Locks this week as the Connecticut Department of Transportation performs maintenance along the roadway.

In an Aug. 7 letter to First Selectman Jon Savino, CTDOT said the Automated Work Zone Speed Control equipment would be deployed during the week of Aug. 9 and remain in use for about two weeks. The schedule could change or be extended because of weather or other unforeseen conditions, the agency said.

The cameras are part of CTDOT’s Know the Zone program, which uses mobile equipment in active highway work zones to enforce reduced speed limits. The state said the Route 20 deployment will occur while maintenance operations are underway.

Under the program, a vehicle detected traveling at least 10 mph above the posted work-zone speed limit can result in a notice mailed to its registered owner. A first offense brings a written warning, while a second violation within one year carries a $75 fine. A vehicle clocked at 85 mph or faster can receive a $75 fine on a first offense.

CTDOT says the enforcement equipment is active only when workers are present, not around the clock. Drivers should see warning signs in advance of an active camera zone. The state also says alleged violations are reviewed before a notice is issued and do not result in insurance points or a moving violation on a driver’s record.

The letter did not identify a precise Route 20 work-zone location or the hours the equipment will operate. CTDOT said its vendor, Acusensus, will operate the mobile equipment.
