• Iconic Central Florida night club building destroyed in fire (mysuncoast.com) — A historic former nightclub building in Avon Park was destroyed in a major fire Wednesday night, but no injuries were reported. Highlands County Fire Rescue and other departments battled the blaze for hours at the well-known pink Beachfront Night Club building, which was under renovation and had one resident living inside. The cause remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal. 
• Smelling smoke in Manatee County? It's probably this, safety officials say (bradenton.com) — Smoke drifting into Manatee County this week is being linked partly to wildfires burning in the Avon Park area of Highlands County, according to state forestry officials. East-northeast winds have carried smoke from those fires and others in eastern Manatee County, prompting widespread odor reports. Conditions may ease when winds shift later in the week.
