Fire Chief Shawn Smith urges people to keep water nearby, burn responsibly, and report any potentially dangerous fires to the sheriff’s office or 9-1-1 if life or property is at risk.

Hear their stories (theledger.com) — A World War II veteran who returned to Bartow after serving in the pioneering all-Black Triple Nickles parachute battalion was among nine heroes honored at this year’s Sun ’n Fun opening night. The Polk County-heavy group, ages 98 to 107, shared remarkable stories of combat, survival, and service that organizers say may be among the last such first-hand tributes.
