📰 News we're reading
• Sarasota, Manatee get hurricane relief in $116 million package (heraldtribune.com) — Manatee County, including hard-hit Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island, is receiving nearly $44 million in FEMA funding for emergency response and debris removal after recent hurricanes. Combined with Sarasota County aid, the relief package totals $116 million, helping local governments recover from storm surge damage, flooded streets and massive debris piles that have strained resources since 2022.

• Longboat Key tests AI technology to track foot traffic (mysuncoast.com) — Longboat Key is testing Placer.ai technology to anonymously track where visitors come from, including how many are Bradenton residents versus tourists or Sarasota locals. Town officials say the data will help island businesses plan for slow seasons without identifying individuals, though some visitors are uneasy about AI-based tracking and the pilot will be evaluated over the next six months.

• Sarasota parking operations to move under police department by end of month (mysuncoast.com) — Sarasota will shift its parking division under the police department on Oct. 28, aiming to improve employee safety, customer service and coordination downtown. For Bradenton residents, it's notable that your city is held up as a model, since Bradenton already runs routine parking through its police department, a structure Sarasota leaders are now choosing to follow.
