Prosecutors drop case against teen after fatal New Year's Eve shooting, citing self-defense (sun-sentinel.com) — Prosecutors have dropped charges against a 17-year-old in the fatal New Year’s Eve shooting at Fort Lauderdale Beach, concluding video and witness evidence supported his claim of self-defense. Investigators say the other teen was armed, had threatened him, and attacked his friends before advancing while reaching for his waistband, leading prosecutors to find the shooting legally justified under Florida law.
   

2. Barricaded suspect taken into custody after SWAT standoff in Fort Lauderdale (local10.com) — Police say a man who barricaded himself inside a Fort Lauderdale business Friday afternoon surrendered peacefully after a multi-hour SWAT response near Northwest 10th Terrace. No injuries were reported, and officers, K-9 units, and aviation support helped secure the scene while negotiators worked to bring the situation under control.
   

3. Florida Grand Opera Announces All-Italian 2026–27 Season in Miami and Fort Lauderdale (miamilivingmagazine.com) — Florida Grand Opera is bringing an all-Italian 2026–27 season to both Miami and Fort Lauderdale, including Don Giovanni performances and a Verdi tribute concert at the Broward Center’s Au-Rene Theater. Fort Lauderdale opera fans can mark February 18, February 20, and May 1, 2027 for major performances close to home.
   

4. Man accused of slapping Delta flight attendant's buttocks during flight (wsfltv.com) — A recent Delta flight departing Fort Lauderdale for Los Angeles was diverted to Atlanta after a passenger allegedly slapped a flight attendant’s backside during beverage service. Federal prosecutors in Georgia have indicted the 32-year-old man on a serious charge of interfering with flight crew members, which can carry a lengthy prison sentence if he’s convicted.
