The Alternative Programs, Inc. Celebrates 40 Years of Impact in Miami-Dade County; Program Was Launched by Miami Icon Georgia Jones-Ayers in Response to the 1980 McDuffie Riot in Miami

The Alternative Programs, Inc. (TAP) invites the community to join a milestone celebration as the organization marks its 40th Anniversary on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building in Miami, from 12 noon to 2 pm. For more information or to reserve a spot, attendees are encouraged to register in advance via Eventbrite.

For four decades, TAP has been a cornerstone in Miami-Dade County, leading efforts to provide no-cash bail alternatives to incarceration through pretrial release, intervention, and rehabilitation services for adults and at-risk youth. Since its founding in 1986, the organization has played a critical role in supporting individuals through the justice system and promoting second chances, accountability, and community stability.

Rodney Baltimore, acclaimed radio personality and Executive Producer and Co-Host of WHQT Hot 105’s Rickey Smiley Morning Show, will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event. A trusted voice across South Florida, Baltimore is widely recognized for his deep-rooted commitment to community service and outreach. Through his platform, he has consistently connected residents with vital resources, opportunities, and initiatives that uplift underserved communities. His decades-long radio career, including roles at WRBD, WOKB, and WEDR 99 JAMZ, has been matched by an unwavering dedication to advocacy, making him a fitting presence for this landmark occasion.

“TAP was built on the idea that true public safety comes from opportunity, not just enforcement,” said Kenneth Kilpatrick, Executive Director of The Alternative Programs, Inc. “Over the past four decades, we’ve evolved to address not only intervention but also prevention, equipping young people and families with the tools they need to succeed before a crisis occurs. This anniversary underscores both our legacy of impact and our responsibility to continue innovating solutions that break cycles and strengthen communities for generations to come.”

The anniversary celebration, scheduled from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., will bring together community leaders, partners, and supporters to reflect on TAP’s legacy and ongoing impact. Guests can expect an afternoon of recognition, connection, and reflection that highlights the organization’s commitment to transforming lives and strengthening communities across South Florida. This 40-year milestone is more than a celebration; it’s a testament to the lives impacted and the work still ahead.

“For 40 years, TAP has quietly yet powerfully changed the trajectory of lives across Miami-Dade,” said Bea Hines, Board Member of The Alternative Programs, Inc. “This organization meets people where they are, often at some of their most challenging moments, and helps redirect them toward stability and purpose. What makes TAP special is its human-centered approach: seeing potential where others may see obstacles. As we mark this milestone, it’s important to recognize that this work is ongoing and essential to our community’s future.”

The event will offer attendees a chance to engage directly with the organization’s work and vision for the future. Admission is free, but RSVP is required due to limited seating.

As TAP looks ahead, the organization remains focused on expanding its services and deepening its impact, continuing to lead in justice reform and community-based intervention.
