The <a href="https://www.cfbroward.org/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Community Foundation of Broward</a> hosted its Spring 2026 Arts Showcase: A Season in Full Bloom on April 17. Broward County nonprofits, which received grants from the Community Foundation of Broward, took the stage to show where the power of funding meets the magic of creativity. From captivating performances to engaging presentations, guests witnessed firsthand the incredible impact of these projects on the community. 

The Foundation welcomed representatives from more than 18 leading arts organizations, alongside board members, donors, staff families, and the families of featured artists. Featured presenters included Brevo Theatre, Girls Choir of South Florida, New City Players, ArtServe represented by Tai Chi practitioner Lori Kerrigan, WEG Films, Avenue of the Arts in partnership with Twenty6North Productions, and Art Prevails Project with Darius Daughtry. Each brought a unique and powerful perspective to the showcase.

The program featured a diverse showcase of artistic expression, including a participatory song and meditation by The Girls Choir of South Florida; a dance performance from The Color Purple by Brevo Theatre; New City Players Inc.&rsquo;s &ldquo;Art &amp; Hope,&rdquo; a playful and immersive theatrical piece exploring friendship and renewal; a Tai Chi presentation by ArtServe; an exploration of the South Florida feature film The Old Man and the Parrot by WEG Films, a surrealist comedy starring Cuban actor Ruben Rabasa that premiered at Slamdance and the Miami Film Festival; a discussion on murals and community impact by Avenue of the Arts; insights from recent community &ldquo;Listening Sessions&rdquo; presented by the Cultural Foundation of Broward; and a reflective poetry reading by the Art Prevails Project.

In an effort to expand, elevate and sustain a vibrant arts community and increase exposure of unique historical and cultural experiences to all residents, one of the Foundation&rsquo;s six grantmaking focus areas is art and culture. Each year, the Foundation funds $3M for the arts. Over the past year, through the Foundation&rsquo;s support of the arts, more than 166,000 individuals experienced museums and historic attractions, 65,000 community members engaged in arts festivals, exhibitions, and performances, and 9,500 participants, from students to seniors, took part in arts training and arts-based educational programs.

Since 2016, the Community Foundation of Broward has invested $3.9M in more than 98 different projects that have engaged more than 100,000+ residents in arts experiences sprinkled throughout 70% of Broward cities. 

&ldquo;We are proud to support such talented, passionate individuals who are leading with love and transforming our community through art and culture,&rdquo; said Community Foundation of Broward, President/CEO Jennifer O'Flannery Anderson. &ldquo;These gatherings are about more than presenting art; they&rsquo;re about bringing people together. By creating space for connection, we spark new collaborations, expand artistic expression, and strengthen the arts community across Broward County.&rdquo;

Presently, the Foundation shepherds 590 charitable funds. Over the past 40 years, it has provided nearly $215 million in support of student achievement, the arts, career readiness, seniors in need, environmental resilience, health care, mental health, affordable housing, disaster relief, nonprofit empowerment and much more. All grants are made possible by the dedicated fundholders who partner with the Foundation to create charitable funds to fuel their philanthropy.

The acquisition further expands Basis Industrial&rsquo;s presence in the Atlanta market following its recent 558,000-square-foot acquisition in Duluth. Ombelle Fort Lauderdale Relocates Mature Mango Trees as Part of Thoughtful Site Preparation

The <a href="https://www.lymphoma.org/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Lymphoma Research Foundation</a> invited the community to tee up for a better tomorrow at the <a href="http://www.lymphoma.org/FloridaGolf" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Third Annual South Florida Golf Invitational</a> on Monday, May 4, 2026. Supporters putted for a purpose at the iconic La Gorce Country Club, one of the most exclusive private golf clubs in the United States, designed by Jack Nicklaus, while being a catalyst in finding cures. The exclusive tournament highlighted the Foundation&rsquo;s strong donor base with a unique, intimate experience for the 72 participants. 

The event raised $575,000 to support the Lymphoma Research Foundation&rsquo;s mission to realize the promise of science to eradicate lymphoma and serve the community touched by this disease. Proceeds will power breakthroughs in research that cure blood cancers and directly support cancer patients in need. Lymphoma is the most common blood cancer in adults and the third most common cancer overall among children. The Lymphoma Research Foundation is the nation&rsquo;s largest nonprofit organization devoted exclusively to funding lymphoma research and supporting the lymphoma community through evidence-based education, support services and resources. 

The annual event kicked off with breakfast, while players warmed up on the driving range. The shamble-style tournament commenced with a shotgun start. Golfers enjoyed lunch, an open bar, and two-hole-in-one challenges to win a Cadillac Escalade generously donated by Murgado Automotive Group and a prize of $50,000 generously donated by Outsmart Labs. After the final hole was played, players gathered in the La Gorce clubhouse for a networking cocktail reception and enjoyed passed hors d&rsquo;oeuvres and the event&rsquo;s signature cocktail, &ldquo;Drive to a Cure.&rdquo; The evening continued with an awards ceremony and an impressive culinary spread, including fresh sushi, a carving station, assorted pastries and a build-your-own sundae station. Guests listened to guest speakers, including hosted by Co-Chair Leigh Olson and Robert McAuley, a member of the Lymphoma Research Foundation&rsquo;s Board of Directors. 

Every five minutes, someone in the United States is diagnosed with lymphoma, and more than one million people in the country are living with, or in remission from, lymphoma/chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).

<a href="https://www.bcckids.org/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Broward Children&rsquo;s Center</a> (BCC) &ndash; a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving infants, children and young adults who are developmentally disabled and medically fragile and their families &ndash; is proud to continue its commitment to delivering the highest quality of care to medically fragile children and has launched a new animal-assisted therapy program at its Children's Comprehensive Care Center (CompCare). The Animal-assisted Therapy program is anchored by Wrigley, a one-year-old Boston Terrier certified therapy dog and marks a new chapter in the facility's approach to whole-child care at the only freestanding sub-acute pediatric skilled nursing facility in the Southeast United States.
CompCare, located in Pompano Beach, is a 36-bed, freestanding, pediatric skilled nursing facility that serves children and young adults from birth to 21 years old who have medically complex conditions and are medically stable. The newly renovated 15-bed nursery serves newborns to eight-year-olds.
The Animal Assisted Therapy program grew from an idea by CEO Marjorie Evans and CompCare Director of Nursing Meghan Nesom, MS, BSN, RN, who recognized the profound impact Wrigley's informal visits had on residents, especially an eight-year-old boy named Sam. Wrigley is the pet of Nesom, who would frequently bring him to visit the children. Once she realized the human-animal bond helped improve the children&rsquo;s wellbeing and quality of life, Evans encouraged Wrigley&rsquo;s formal certification as a therapy dog. 
Sam arrived at BCC&rsquo;s CompCare after a terrible car accident changed everything. Sam was left with a spinal cord injury that took away his ability to move his arms and legs and breathe on his own. What followed were months in a pediatric intensive care unit, where machines hummed constantly and days blurred together. When he was finally stable, he moved to rehab, only to return to the ICU again for complications. By the time he was cleared for long-term pediatric care, Sam had learned something no child should learn so young: how to protect himself by shutting the world out. 
In 2025, Sam was flown from Texas to BCC&rsquo;s CompCare. He arrived with a small collection of belongings and a heart that had quietly decided not to hope too much. The BCC staff was ready to welcome him and help him heal and grow into this new version of life, but Sam was not ready. He was quiet, withdrawn, and his answer to almost everything was a simple, automatic &ldquo;no.&rdquo; That was until the day he met Wrigley.
Now, Sam is not the quiet, guarded boy who arrived with &ldquo;no&rdquo; as his shield but a child full of humor, preference, curiosity, and joy. 
Nesom now manages BCC&rsquo;s Animal-Assisted Therapy program and personally funded all of Wrigley's training. Wrigley officially joined the program in January 2026, after completing his training as an AKC Canine Good Citizen, having been trained and tested through a private dog therapy company. American Heritage Schools Celebrates Class of 2026 for Acceptances to the Nation's Top Universities

In the ongoing fight against drunk driving and drugged driving, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Southeast Florida hosted its 15th Annual UKG &amp; Salah Foundation Hero&rsquo;s Pride Move with MADD &amp; MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K Presented by the Florida Panthers &amp; the Sheriff&rsquo;s Foundation of Broward County on April 26, 2026. 
Founder and Honorary Chairperson Heather Geronemus founded Move With MADD and MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K after her late father, Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2009. In commemoration of its 15th anniversary, the annual event debuted its rebrand as Move With MADD &amp; MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K, reflecting expanded momentum in the fight against impaired driving and deepened community engagement. 
Thousands of walkers, runners, strollers, adaptive athletes, dogs and supporters of all ages came together in downtown Fort Lauderdale to take steps to raise awareness and funds to end impaired driving for good. The event surpassed its fundraising goal, generating more than $260,000 to save lives and support victims of drunk driving. The proceeds benefit MADD Southeast Florida&rsquo;s community education, victim support services and youth prevention programs. Every dollar donated remains in South Florida to provide victim services and prevention education at no cost. 
Attendees enjoyed a morning full of festivities, including children&rsquo;s activities, an awards ceremony, live musical performances and vendor and educational booths. The morning began with former NFL Cheerleader Bella Denton singing the National Anthem. LFT Lab and Roar Station&rsquo;s Alex Piccirilli, a Nike trainer featured on Netflix&rsquo;s &ldquo;Kickstart Fitness with the Basics,&rdquo; led a fun and engaging warmup before runners and walkers hit the starting line. WTVJ-NBC 6&rsquo;s Community Reporter Miriam Tapia, alongside Emcee Doug Esquire, kept the vibes high and the crowd hyped from start to finish. 
The annual fundraising event was attended by local dignitaries, including Colonel Steve Robson, Undersheriff of Broward Sheriff&rsquo;s Office; Sgt. Ryan Clifton from Broward Sheriff&rsquo;s Office; Sgt. Trevor Thomas from Fort Lauderdale Police Department&rsquo;s DUI Unit; Lt. Indiana Miranda from Florida Highway Patrol; Broward County District 3 Commissioner Michael Udine; and Fort Lauderdale District 3 Commissioner Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen. 
At the event, Commissioner Udine presented Geronemus with a proclamation declaring April 26 Move With MADD &amp; MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale Day in Broward County. At a City of Fort Lauderdale Commission meeting before the event, City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis and Vice Mayor Sorensen, alongside the Fort Lauderdale Police Department&rsquo;s DUI Task Force also presented a proclamation to MADD Southeast Florida, declaring April 26 Move With MADD &amp; MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale Day in the city. 
In honor of the 15th anniversary, the MADD team presented Geronemus with a meaningful bracelet engraved with her guiding motto, &ldquo;Don&rsquo;t give back, just give,&rdquo; a simple yet powerful reflection of her enduring generosity and the spirit she has inspired in others.
&ldquo;When I started this event in 2011, after losing my father, Dr. Robert Geronemus, to a drunk driver, I made a promise that I would do everything in my power to help prevent another family from experiencing that kind of loss,&rdquo; said Geronemus. &ldquo;What began as grief became action. What began as pain became purpose. And what began as my family&rsquo;s tragedy became a movement that each and every attendee has been a part of for 15 years.&rdquo; 
&ldquo;That is why the name of this event matters. Move With MADD &amp; MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K reflects exactly who we are and what this community has done for 15 years: we move. We move hearts. We move people to action. We move communities to care. And we move this fight forward. Additionally, the complex will include four imaging rooms, four operating rooms, and support services.The project also includes a full-service pharmacy, sleep laboratory, and a 25,000-square-foot ambulatory outpatient center, as well as dining, outdoor spaces, and meeting space.&ldquo;We are grateful for the trust Johns Hopkins All Children&rsquo;s Hospital has placed in us to deliver this facility for our community,&rdquo; Operations Manager Bryan Durkin said. &ldquo;We are excited to work toward the completion of this project, which will have a lasting, positive impact on children and families for many years to come.&rdquo;The project is scheduled for completion in 2027.Robins &amp; Morton is the general contractor.
