📰 News we're reading

1. Voters approve restoration of Miami stadium where speedboats raced and Jimmy Buffett played (nbcmiami.com) — Miami voters have approved a referendum to restore the long-closed Miami Marine Stadium on Virginia Key, paving the way for a public–private partnership to revive the iconic waterfront venue. The city will retain ownership while a private operator manages events, funding repairs through event revenue instead of new taxes. Neighbors are watching closely, raising concerns about traffic, noise, and environmental impacts from a large-scale entertainment space.

2. Young attorney backed by Trump allies appears to defeat Miami-Dade judge (miamiherald.com) — A closely watched Miami-Dade judicial race appears to have ended with 30-year-old Coral Gables attorney Destiny Alvarez narrowly unseating longtime Judge Mavel Ruiz, whose Trump presidential library ruling drew intense political backlash. The contest, centered on downtown Miami land for the proposed library and hard-hitting campaign texts to Miami-Dade voters, raises fresh questions about money, influence, and disinformation in officially nonpartisan local judicial elections.

3. Associate of former Rep. David Rivera sentenced to 5 years in Venezuelan-agent case (hanfordsentinel.com) — A political consultant tied to former Miami congressman David Rivera has been sentenced in Miami federal court to five years in prison and millions in forfeiture over unregistered work for Venezuela's government. Rivera, held at the Miami federal detention center, awaits his own sentencing and a separate tax trial tied to the same foreign-agent case, which involved Miami business connections and South Florida-based money flows.

4. Reno Willard: Reno Pierre, President of the Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division (communitynewspapers.com) — Miami-born attorney Reno Pierre, raised in Little Haiti and North Miami, shares how his background shaped his path to leading the Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division. In a new podcast episode, he talks mentorship, ethical use of AI in law, and expanding pro bono services for underserved communities. Miami Community Newspapers hosts the conversation as part of its broader local news and podcast network.

5. Miami-Dade Sheriff Faces Auditing Questions (miamiindependent.com) — Miami-Dade residents are being asked to fund a nearly $1.2 billion Sheriff's Office budget even though key details on staffing, overtime, and chain of command remain unclear. With the Sheriff now an independent constitutional officer in Miami commissioners must decide this fall how hard to press for transparency before approving the budget and possibly shifting the county jail under the Sheriff's control.
