📰 News we're reading

1. Plan to protect Miami-Dade from storms: $4.5 billion to elevate thousands of homes (lodinews.com) — Thousands of Miami-Dade homes and key buildings could be elevated or floodproofed in a proposed $4.5 billion federal plan to protect the county from stronger storms and rising seas. The Army Corps blueprint targets high-risk areas like Homestead, Cutler Bay, and Miami Beach, but would require major congressional funding and local cost-sharing, plus homeowners meeting strict building-code requirements before work can begin.

2. These pampered pups are strutting their paws at Kiki on the River to support a local dog rescue (wsvn.com) — Dog lovers in Miami can head to Kiki on the River this Saturday for Paws & Pose, a brunch and dog runway show supporting a local rescue. Up to 25 pups will compete, with a quarter of ticket sales donated, plus portraits, a photobooth, and celebrity judges planned along the Miami River.

3. 6 arrested in $5.8 million scheme targeting condo and HOA boards in Miami-Dade, sheriff's office says (cbsnews.com) — Miami-Dade authorities say six people have been arrested in an alleged $5.8 million scheme that siphoned money from condo and HOA accounts, largely in Hialeah. Investigators accuse a property manager and associates of using control over boards, many led by elderly volunteers, to route funds meant for repairs and services into personal accounts, and warn losses may be higher.

4. Miami Herald, WLRN named finalists for prestigious award for Brightline series (miamiherald.com) — Miami readers may be interested to know the Miami Herald and WLRN have been named finalists for the 2026 Gerald Loeb Awards for their "Killer Train" investigation into Brightline's safety record and public funding. The series, already honored by Pulitzer and IRE juries, used extensive data and records to show Brightline's high death rate and significant taxpayer support despite delayed safety upgrades.
