Waste hauler to make single $24 million payment to settle lawsuit (tcpalm.com) — Port St. Lucie is set to receive a full $24 million payment from Waste Pro by May 10, ending years of legal battles over trash service. City leaders haven’t yet decided how to use the money, but company officials say they hope it will be returned to residents in some form. The City Council will determine where the funds ultimately go.

2. HUD secretary visits Port St. Lucie redevelopment site under consideration for Opportunity Zone (wqcs.org) — Port St. Lucie leaders just hosted HUD Secretary Scott Turner at the Walton & One redevelopment site, which they hope to designate as a federal Opportunity Zone to boost jobs and investment. The 73-acre area along U.S. 1 could grow into a mixed-use hub with restaurants, housing, offices, hotels and even a future soccer stadium, potentially reshaping the city’s east side economy.

3. 5 new Florida waterfront restaurants could be opening by fall of '27 (tcpalm.com) — Port St. Lucie residents can look forward to five new waterfront restaurants at The Grove in The Port District, with construction underway and openings targeted for fall 2027. The city-owned riverfront park will feature concepts ranging from coastal cuisine to sushi and cocktails, all managed by Atlas Restaurant Group as part of a broader effort to build a vibrant dining and entertainment destination.

Education and healthcare, helped by the new Florida Coast Medical Center in Port St. Lucie, were rare bright spots, adding roughly 1,200 jobs, but the region still saw a net loss of 2,200 jobs across key industries.
