Car Hit, Killed Elderly Pedestrian In Wheelchair In Tampa: Police
An elderly pedestrian in a wheelchair was hit and killed by a car while crossing a Tampa street in heavy rain, police said.
TAMPA, FL — A man in his early 70s who was using a wheelchair died after being struck by a car while crossing North Nebraska Avenue during heavy rain Wednesday evening, Tampa police said in a news release.
Officers responded to the crash near East Lambright Street shortly before 8:30 p.m.
The man was crossing the road when a northbound 2011 silver Hyundai Sonata traveling in the inside lane hit him, police said.

The driver, a woman in her mid-20s, didn’t see him in time to avoid the collision, investigators said.
The impact threw the man from his wheelchair, leaving him critically injured. Officers and emergency responders provided life-saving measures before he was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

The initial crash pushed the man's wheelchair into the southbound lanes and it was subsequently struck by a second vehicle, a 2021 dark-colored Hyundai Sonata, police said.
Both drivers stopped after the crash and cooperated with investigators.
Preliminary findings indicate that neither speed nor impairment was a factor in the crash.
