Suspect In Downtown St. Pete Fatal Shooting Sought By Police

A 29-year-old man died after being shot during an altercation in downtown St. Petersburg, police said. The suspect is still at large.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Investigators are searching for the suspect in an early Saturday morning fatal shooting in downtown St. Petersburg.

Peter-Austin Afentakis, 29, was shot and killed during an altercation near 1st Avenue N. and Beach Drive NE just before 3 a.m., St. Petersburg police said in a news release.

Officers responded to a report of gunshots in the area and found the victim at the scene.

Afentakis was brought to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries a few hours later, police said.

A man who lives in an apartment building near where the shooting happened heard the gunfire.

“I was like, well, it is a holiday, so maybe it could possibly be fireworks or something like that. But then I heard an ambulance, and then no real noise after that,” he told WFLA.

The suspect is still at large Tuesday morning. No information has been released about the suspect’s identity.
