📰 News we're reading

1. 2 men sentenced to decades in prison for deadly Gwinnett County gang-related shooting (kiss104fm.com) — Two Minnesota men have received decades-long prison sentences for a 2022 gang-related shooting in Snellville that killed one person and seriously injured another. Investigators say the pair were hired hitmen targeting rival gang members in Gwinnett County and used Flock cameras to track them. Authorities also tied the men to another shooting in Fayetteville.

2. Gwinnett County DA challenges new law making her office nonpartisan (kiss104fm.com) — Gwinnett County's district attorney is suing the state over a new law that would make her office and several other local positions nonpartisan. She argues House Bill 369 unfairly targets five metro Atlanta counties that use medical examiners instead of coroners. Supporters say the measure is meant to reduce partisanship in local government, and the case is still unfolding.

3. 400 sign petition opposing plans to develop rural community in metro Atlanta county (wsbtv.com) — Hundreds of residents are urging Gwinnett County leaders to reject rezonings around the Rowen research campus that could transform one of the county's last rural areas. A new Harbins-Alcovy Small Area Plan will guide housing types and conservation near Highway 316. Neighbors say they moved here for open land and fear irreversible changes to their community's character.

4. Braves' No. 16 prospect proving he's more than just an elite speedster (mlb.com) — A rising Braves outfield prospect is turning heads with his mix of speed, contact hitting, and growing power, including a strong run since his promotion to Triple-A Gwinnett. He's leading the system in steals and doubles while posting an impressive batting line. His elite running ability and defensive range could eventually boost Atlanta's lineup and outfield depth.
