Savannah-Chatham schools target 95% third grade reading proficiency by 2031 (wtoc.com) — Savannah-Chatham schools and community partners are pushing to boost third grade reading proficiency from about 53% to 95% by 2031, a goal that could reshape local students' futures. Through the Moonshot Initiative, schools like Hodge Elementary are already expanding small-group support, family engagement, and after-school reading, while organizers urge the entire Savannah community to help children practice literacy every day.
   

2. Georgia Ports touts progress on housing investments (islandpacket.com) — Savannah families are already seeing benefits from Georgia Ports Authority's $6 million commitment to the Savannah Affordable Housing Fund, which has helped 230 households with repairs, purchases, and new construction near port neighborhoods. The initiative supports both residents and port workers, while local parents can now register children ages 4 to 16 for the Savannah Children's Choir's 2026–2027 season to build musical skills and confidence.
   

3. Georgia Power Regulators Hear Public Fury Over Data Centers in Rare Savannah Meeting (envirolink.org) — State utility regulators came to Savannah for a rare field meeting, hearing residents' anger over rising power bills and a huge data center project planned just outside the city. Locals pressed for more transparency from Georgia Power and questioned whether commissioners are protecting everyday customers, as upcoming elections could shift the commission's balance and future decisions on energy costs and data center growth.
   

4. West Nile infections increasing in Georgia, DPH says (wsav.com) — Savannah and Chatham County residents are being urged to protect themselves from mosquito bites after traps here and in other Georgia counties tested positive for West Nile virus, with eight cases and one death confirmed statewide. Health officials recommend repellents, long sleeves, and draining standing water around homes as mosquito season continues through October, especially for seniors and those with health conditions.
   

5. Port of Savannah exports rise 4.2 percent in August (griceconnect.com) — Export volumes through the Port of Savannah rose 4.2% in August, even as overall container traffic stayed roughly flat compared with last year. Georgia Ports officials say strong customer demand and faster truck turn times at Garden City Terminal are helping keep freight moving, though weather in Asia and Panama Canal conditions continue to affect Savannah-linked supply chains.
