4. Georgia Southern lands $29.8 million to open Georgia's first college of optometry (wjcl.com) — Statesboro is getting Georgia’s first college of optometry, with Georgia Southern awarded $29.8 million in state funding to launch the new program on Highway 301. The school will offer a Doctor of Optometry degree, expand local health education, and could boost both Statesboro’s economy and access to eye care across rural Georgia.
   

5. Statesboro keeps millage rate at 8.625, turns to reserves to cover shortfall (griceconnect.com) — Statesboro City Council chose to keep the city property tax rate at 8.625 mills, covering a $1.4 million gap by dipping further into reserves instead of raising taxes. In the same meeting, council advanced workforce and affordable housing efforts, approved a sober living home, backed a hotel near Tormenta Way, and funded several road, utility, and infrastructure projects around town.
