New program gives Maui fire survivors path to home ownership (dailydispatch.com) — Fire survivors in Wailuku are getting a new path to homeownership as four local houses are secured and under renovation through Hawaiian Community Assets’ Ua Hale A‘ela rent-to-own program. Seventeen Maui units in total will be reserved for survivors, allowing families to rent now and buy within about two years. Organizers say the goal is to turn long-term renters into stable homeowners after the disaster.
   

2. Maui police arrest Wailuku man after barricade incident (hawaiinewsnow.com) — Wailuku residents saw a major police response Wednesday after a 36-year-old local man allegedly violated an order for protection and barricaded himself inside a home on Hoowaiwai Loop, prompting school safety protocols and nearby evacuations. Maui police deployed their Special Response Team and K-9 Unit, resolving the standoff peacefully and arresting the man, who was then taken to the Wailuku Police Station with bail set at $20,000. Investigators say additional charges may follow.
   

3. Bystander Who Floored Hawaii Congressional Candidate Explains His Intervention (lowerbuckstimes.com) — A high-profile Maui congressional candidate case has now reached a Wailuku courtroom, where a judge ordered a mental health assessment after an alleged threatening confrontation on Keawakapu Beach. A local construction worker describes stepping in only after hearing a threat, while the candidate’s attorney disputes claims about weapons and calls the $1 million bail excessive.
   

4. Maui police arrest nude suspect after man, 63, killed in ‘brutal' attack (staradvertiser.com) — A homicide investigation on Maui has led police to arrest a 20-year-old suspect who was later booked at the Wailuku Police Station after evaluation at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Officers say a 63-year-old Lahaina man was found dead at a condo-resort, and surveillance footage showed a nude man allegedly attacking him. The suspect remains in custody as detectives pursue second-degree murder charges.
