📰 News we're reading

1. Charter and online schools continue enrollment boom as Idaho school districts decline (idahonews.com) — Families in Boise should know the Boise School District has lost more than 1,600 students over five years, the steepest decline in Idaho. While charter and online schools surge statewide, local officials say high living costs in the capital are worsening district enrollment drops and straining traditional school budgets, even as Idaho's overall population keeps rising.

2. Overhaul planned for nonprofit facilities at Pierce Park (boisedev.com) — A major upgrade is in the works at Pierce Park Greens in Northwest Boise, where First Tee of Idaho plans new classrooms, year-round training spaces, and a pro shop to expand youth golf programs. With a 50-year lease and a large fundraising campaign ahead, the nonprofit aims to open the new learning and coaching centers by 2028, giving Boise kids more winter and summer opportunities.

3. Boaters squeeze in final late summer trips as Lucky Peak drawdown begins early (kivitv.com) — Boise-area boaters are racing to enjoy Lucky Peak as the reservoir's annual drawdown started about a week early, dropping levels roughly 1.5 feet per day and closing some ramps. Short ramps at Barclay Bay and the Robie ramp are already shut, and the long Barclay Bay ramp may close by week's end, while Turner Gulch reopens Wednesday morning for year-round access.

4. Excomm (August) - PES Chapter of IEEE Boise Section (Monthly) (ieee.org) — Engineers and energy professionals in Boise can plug into the IEEE PES Boise Section's August Executive Committee meeting at the Micron Engineering Center on Manitou Avenue. The group will plan fall events, including a September 21 speaker, senior member activities, a section picnic, and technical programs, while assigning clear action items for local volunteers.

5. Space Robots (boisestatepublicradio.org) — Boise will host visiting scientists this fall for Interplanetary Life – March of the Robots, a space-focused event exploring robotic missions to moons, Mars, and asteroids. Ahead of their arrival, Idaho Matters is spotlighting a different mission scientist each Monday at noon and 8 p.m., inviting local listeners to follow these "space robots" across the universe.
