(eastidahonews.com) — A hard freeze warning early Friday directly affects Shelley, with temperatures expected to plunge between 18 and 22 degrees that could damage gardens and outdoor plumbing. Residents are urged to cover plants, protect exposed pipes, and prepare now for the brief but intense cold snap.

Around the Horn: 5A race heats up, Preston starts another win streak, and Malad gets a combined no-no (eastidahonews.com) — Shelley High’s softball team slugged past Idaho Falls 14–10, powered by home runs from Audrey Wattenbarger, Macey Winder and Sarah Kidman as the Russets tightened the 5A District 6 race. The roundup also tracks key wins by Blackfoot, Hillcrest, Preston and others shaping the current standings.

3. ‘I knew it wouldn't hold': Truck driver involved in Teton Dam construction predicted its collapse (eastidahonews.com) — A 93-year-old Shelley resident, Virgil Jonak, is sharing vivid memories of working on the ill-fated Teton Dam and witnessing the devastating flooding that reached streets and homes in Shelley. He recalls warning coworkers the dam wouldn’t hold, hauling dynamite through dark tunnels, and returning for cleanup after the collapse, all while coping with fear for his daughter’s safety and the tragedy’s lasting emotional toll.

4. Idaho passes one-time funding for mental health program (nwpb.org) — Idaho lawmakers have approved a one-time funding boost to temporarily restore the ACT mental health program, and Rep. Ben Fuhriman of Shelley was among the first to push for its return. The $10 million package, drawn from settlement funds, will keep ACT and peer support running through June 2027, but providers and advocates warn that staffing challenges and uncertain long-term funding still threaten care for vulnerable patients.
