Midwest 'Heat Dome': Dangerous Heat Wave On Its Way To Chicago Area

Afternoon heat index values over 100 degrees are possible.

After several days of cooler temperatures, dangerous heat is expected for the Chicago area starting next week.

First, temperatures will start to warm up on Saturday, which has a high of 81 degrees. It will be even warmer and humid on Sunday, which has a high of 88, according to the National Weather Service.

Monday through Wednesday already have an "elevated excessive heat risk," according to the current forecast.

Dangerous heat with afternoon heat index values over 100 degrees is expected starting on Monday and continuing into the work week.

The current forecast calls for a high of 92 on Monday, 94 on Tuesday, 95 degrees on Wednesday and 95 on Thursday.

AccuWeather said the Midwest heat dome will center over the Ohio Valley, and the heat will expand outward and reach parts of the Plains, the Great Lakes, the East and the Gulf Coast.

"Chicago is poised to experience at least five days in a row with highs of 90 degrees or greater next week," AccuWeather forecasters said.

The weather service advises staying indoors in air conditions whenever possible during a heat wave. You should also remain hydrated by drinking water, and you should check on those most vulnerable to heat, including children and seniors.

If you have to go outside, "go early or late in the day, and dress in light-colored clothing," the weather service said.
