Drone Tracks Alsip Carjacking Suspects, 2 In Custody: Police

ALSIP, IL—Alsip patrol officers used a drone to track down two suspects in a vehicular hijacking Tuesday morning. Two Matteson men, Jihad Gordon and Robert Mixon, were taken into custody, police said.

Mixon was charged with two counts of attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking.

Gordon, who is on parole for a weapons charge, is facing two felony counts of aggravated vehicular hijacking and obstruction. Police said he also was found to have a DuPage County warrant for resisting a peace officer.

Just after 11 p.m., Alsip police responded to a call reporting an armed person in the 4800 block of 122nd Street.

Police determined that two armed men, later identified as Gordon and Mixon, approached two people sitting inside a Chevy Equinox.

Gordon, described as wearing a yellow tracksuit, reportedly displayed a handgun and demanded the driver's keys and wallet. The driver and passenger exited the vehicle, and both Gordon and Mixon entered the car in an apparent attempt to take the vehicle.

When the pair couldn’t start the vehicle, police said they fled the scene on foot. Alsip police, with assistance from Oak Lawn police, initiated a search of the area utilizing patrol officers and the department’s drone.

During the search, police found Mixon near 122nd Street and Cicero Avenue, where police said he was taken into custody.

Meanwhile, police said Gordon continued fleeing on foot from the 12200 block of Cicero Avenue. The department's drone maintained continuous observation of him for approximately five minutes and provided a location to patrol officers, who found him hiding beneath a large tree in the 4800 block of 121st Place. Gordon initially tried to run away, police said, but officers took him into custody after a brief foot pursuit.

Officers recovered a Glock 9 mm handgun from Gordon, equipped with an extended magazine, during the investigation, police said.

Mixon and Gordon were both due for a detention hearing Thursday afternoon at the Bridgeview Courthouse.

The drone was acquired in 2025 by the Alsip police department and can fly up to 45 mph. Alsip police currently have four trained pilots. The drone is essential in searching for missing persons and in tracking fleeing suspects.
