ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — A police officer assigned as a school resource officer at the Forest View Educational Center lost his firearm while using the restroom Monday, prompting the cancelation of classes Tuesday. A search, including the use of a K-9 unit, has been unsuccessful in locating the gun.

Authorities believe the firearm was stolen in the "unfortunate and embarrassing incident."

Based on the length of time necessary to complete a thorough search and out of an abundance of caution, school administration made the determination to cancel classes," the Arlington Heights Police Department said in a news release regarding the incident.

The officer, who had removed his firearm from his duty holster while using the restroom, realized the firearm was missing shortly after students were dismissed for the day at 2121 S. Goebbert Road.

After an unsuccessful search of the bathroom for the weapon, police said hallway surveillance images were immediately reviewed, which determined a limited number of persons entered the restroom. Soon thereafter, notification of a firearm theft was made to school and police officials.

"The Police Department takes this matter very seriously and intends to dedicate all necessary resources toward the recovery of the firearm and individual(s) responsible," AHPD said. "We understand the community's obvious concerns regarding a matter of this magnitude."

Additional uniformed police presence will be present at the Forest View campus Tuesday and throughout the week.
