• From the Chicago suburbs to short line railroad companies, proposed merger heightens concerns (dailyherald.com) — Barrington's long-awaited Route 14 underpass is finally under construction, but a major Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern merger could bring many more freight trains through town and potentially require even more grade separations. Former village president Karen Darch warns that double-tracking near Barrington may turn the EJ&E line into a freight superhighway, intensifying delays and safety concerns unless railroads help fund additional underpasses.
