1. Peoria bomb squad called after explosive device found in Canton (wmbdradio.com) — Peoria’s bomb squad was called to Canton after police found an explosive device during a traffic stop at North Avenue B and West Chestnut Street, which was later neutralized. Officers say there is no ongoing threat to public safety. A related search in Farmington turned up no bomb-making materials, and authorities have not yet released details on possible charges. 
2. Arrest made in connection to alleged theft of funds from Canton Friendship Festival (wmbdradio.com) — Canton Police have charged a local man with allegedly taking more than $500 from the Canton Friendship Festival Board’s account, prompting new financial safeguards. Festival leaders say they removed the accused board member, added co-treasurers, and tightened oversight to better track every dollar. The board also acknowledged it should have communicated with the community more clearly and sooner.
3. Larry E Hudson (democratnewspapers.com) — Family and friends are invited to honor Larry E. Hudson at a celebration of life on August 15 at the American Legion on South 4th Avenue in Canton. Hudson, a retired coal mine superintendent with deep family ties across Illinois and beyond, passed away in December 2025. Memorials are suggested to several local and regional organizations.

Meet Dave Demler: ROE26 Newest Leader (communitynewsmarket.com) — Canton residents now have one of their own, Dave Demler, leading Regional Office of Education 26, splitting his workweek between the Canton and Macomb offices. Demler, born in Canton and married to a Westview Elementary teacher, oversees services for 18 districts, including safety inspections, teacher licensure, and new mental health and attendance-support programs that affect Fulton County schools and families.
5. July 7, 2026 Highway Minutes (fultoncountyil.gov) — County highway officials met at the Fulton County Highway Department in Canton to review maintenance work, bridge projects, and union contract talks. They approved minutes, advanced several consent agenda items, and noted the Bethel Road Bridge project is still awaiting FEMA action. These decisions help shape upcoming road work that Canton-area drivers will notice.
