Chicago Heights Glass Packaging Plant To Close, Nearly 200 To Be Laid Off

The company reported the impending closure to the state in mid-April, projecting the closing for late-September.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — A glass packaging company will soon close its Chicago Heights plant, laying off nearly 200 employees, according to a worker adjustment and relocation notification filed with the state in April.

Gerresheimer Glass, Inc. is a leading global manufacturer specializing in high-quality primary packaging and drug delivery systems made of glass and plastics for the pharmaceutical, biotech, and cosmetics industries. Its moulded glass facility in Chicago Heights is located at 1131 Arnold St.

The WARN Act requires employers with 75 employees or more to notify the state when they plan to lay off workers. Under the Act, employers must give workers at least 60 days' notice for a plant closure or a "mass" layoff.

The Chicago Heights facility, specifically, produces serum bottles, infusion bottles and screw-cap bottles in various designs, according to the company's website. The Chicago Heights plant closure will impact 172 employees, the company said.

The company said in February that it would close the Chicago Heights plant by end of Fiscal Year 2026. The company said it would instead shift production to factories in India and Italy.

The plant's closure date is listed as Sept. 30, 2026.
