Mike Leonard of Winnetka, a former TV correspondent for NBC News, shares a true account about overcoming early failure by using creative curiosity to find fulfillment in life. His story: “Beating the Odds – On Your Terms.”
Vernon Hills resident Kitty Loewy relates how two people found each other in World War II in “An Unexpected Journey – A Story of Courage, Risk, and Defiance.”
Adam Bottner of Buffalo Grove has never gotten high, but he’s happy. If that’s a crime, lock him up. His story: “Catching the Big Fish in Elmhurst.”
Judy Yacker, a Highland Park resident, finds that a European road trip isn’t all it’s cracked up to be in her story “Driving Me Crazy.” 
Lou Greenwald, also of Highland Park, shares his story - “I Needed to Walk Through Auschwitz.”
Growing up on predominantly Jewish Miami Beach, Lou saw many older people walking on Washington Avenue who had black numbers on their arms.He never talked to them.
Short Story Theatre was founded in 2012 and is dedicated to promoting storytelling as a vibrant, contemporary art form.Co-founder and Producer/Emcee Donna Lubow says, “Stories are creative non-fiction, based on personal experiences.More than a hundred storytellers from Chicago and the northern suburbs have melded writing skills and performance skills to entertain and inspire our Short Story Theatre audiences.”

Founded in 1983 by Lori Lippitz, Maxwell Street Klezmer Band has played at Carnegie Hall, toured Europe, and provided the soundtrack for Chicagoland’s Jewish celebrations for over 4 decades. The band marked its 40th “Bandiversary” at The Old Town School of Folk Music in 2023. The group is releasing a new live album as well as an educational band book series in 2026.&nbsp;

Nominations Sought for Maureen Wener Public Service Award

The West Deerfield Township Democrats are inviting citizens and organizations to place nominations for the third annual Maureen Wener Public Service Award, in honor of Maureen Wener, a role model of public service in Deerfield, who was killed in a bicycle accident in 2023. We wish to honor citizens who show similar dedication to public service. Nominations can come from any resident, organization, or board within the Township. Individuals may nominate someone else or themselves, and must be emailed to info@WestDeerfieldDems,com no later than August 29th. Award criteria: The award is non-partisan; nominees need to live in or work in West Deerfield Township and should exemplify Maureen’s commitment to make our community a better place to live. The nomination should include-the date you are nominating a candidate -the nominee’s name and contact information (address / phone / email) and -the nominator’s name, relationship to nominee and contact information (address / phone / email);-a description of Nominee’s grass roots activism, commitment to democratic principles/public service, and/or humanitarian principles. A committee appointed by the Executive Board of the West Deerfield Township Democratic Organization will select the winner. The recipient of the award will be notified by September 22 and the award presentation will take place on October 18th from 2-4 in the Deerfield Public Library.
