DeKalb Council Reviews Changes To City Boards And Commissions (1023thecoyote.net) ā DeKalbās City Council has advanced an ordinance that would overhaul several volunteer boards, reactivating the Human Relations Commission with local social-service leaders and eliminating the long-inactive Landmark Commission. The measure also lets key citizen boards meet only as needed instead of monthly. It passed 5ā3 on first reading and returns for a final vote in two weeks.

2. Is DeKalb ready for commuter rail service? New study to look at planning, environment (shawlocal.com) ā DeKalb is taking a major step toward potential commuter rail service by hiring TY Lin International to study safety, environmental impacts, and feasibility for a line between Elburn and DeKalb. Backed by an IDOT planning grant and rising bus ridership, the study could position the city for federal transit funding. City leaders say now is the time to move before grant money disappears.

3. āLOOT: A Story of Crime and Redemption' highlights Cambodian artifact trafficking, repatriation (northernstar.info) ā Residents may be interested to know that NIUās Center for Southeast Asian Studies just hosted the U.S. premiere of the documentary āLOOT: A Story of Crime and Redemptionā at DeKalbās Egyptian Theatre, along with a panel of regional scholars. The free event explored Cambodiaās struggle to reclaim looted artifacts, the global art market that enabled trafficking, and the cultural and spiritual importance of returning statues to their communities.

Schaumburg Chick-fil-A employee awarded $25,000 college scholarship from chain (dailyherald.com) ā An NIU psychology student who commutes to DeKalb from Schaumburg just received a surprise $25,000 Chick-fil-A scholarship, making it possible for him to live on campus instead of driving two hours. The award recognizes his work ethic at the West Schaumburg restaurant and will help him continue pursuing his goal of supporting othersā mental health.
