Catalytic Converters Stolen From Vehicles At Car Dealership In Downers Grove

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Police say catalytic converters were stolen from two vehicles at Star Auto in one morning.

Officers were called to the car dealership and maintenance shop at 1644 Ogden Ave. around 1:45 p.m. on Sept. 22 for a report of stolen catalytic converters. A manager told police video surveillance footage showed two people coming onto the dealership property around 2:15 p.m. and "walking around vehicles," a police report said.

They told police the subjects checked "multiple vehicles" and then chose some to take catalytic converters from.

Police say a catalytic converter was cut from a 2022 Ford E350 Super Duty that had been sold. The manager told police the buyer changed their mind about purchasing the truck once they learned of the theft.

That catalytic converter was valued at $3,600 and the total cost of repair with labor was valued at $4,500.

A catalytic converter was also stolen from a 2010 Land Rover Range Rover. That part was valued at $3,800 and the total cost of repair with labor was valued at $5,000.

Police say the subjects also tried to steal a catalytic converter from a 2020 Kia Sorrento, causing damage to that car.
