• Firefighters Rescue Man From Fox River In Elgin (patch.com) — Firefighters in downtown Elgin pulled a man from the Fox River after he went underwater near the Chicago Street bridge, getting him to shore within minutes. He was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin with no major injuries reported, and no firefighters were hurt. South Elgin and Countryside fire districts assisted in the rescue.
   

• Golden Corridor YMCA closing its Taylor Y branch in Elgin (chicagotribune.com) — Elgin residents who use the Taylor Family YMCA on McLean Blvd. face its closure on Oct. 1, though school-based Y programs will continue. About 400 local members can shift to the Schaumburg branch at current rates through December, while leaders explore building a new Elgin facility. The decision follows years of repair challenges and lingering COVID-19 impacts.
   

• National Transportation Safety Board launches rail safety campaign (chicagotribune.com) — A new National Transportation Safety Board rail safety campaign launched in Chicago is partly driven by recent Illinois crashes, including a 2025 Elgin collision where a Union Pacific train struck a landscaping vehicle, killing one person and injuring two. Investigators say dozens of worker deaths and recurring safety issues demand stronger protections, especially during risky train shoving movements. The effort could influence future safeguards on tracks running through Elgin.
