Artist Statement
Val Zee is an artist based in Evanston, Illinois and the founder of Smart Art Studios. Since 2004 she’s built a creative career that’s taken her from decorative painting to teaching art and developing her own studio practice. Her mixed media work explores women and the messages we absorb through advertising and popular culture. Val earned her B.A. in Studio Art from Northeastern Illinois University. For more than twenty years she has taught art in schools, senior communities and community art spaces. She has seen firsthand how making art builds confidence, connection and self-expression. She believes creativity is a powerful form of communication and that everyone has a story worth telling. The iconic and delicious Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder is headed to you on Friday, September 18th!
Chicago might have its deep dish pizza, but there’s another hometown creation that’s just as hearty and delicious, and quite possibly even cheesier: the Pizza Pot Pie. Created in 1972 at Chicago Pizza &amp; Oven Grinder, located just across the street from the location of the infamous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, this ooey-gooey masterpiece just might deliver the most legendary cheese pull in all of Chi-town!
This ingenious creation starts with scratchmade triple-raised Sicilian bread dough. It’s filled with rich homemade tomato sauce that’s slow-simmered with olive oil, fresh garlic, onions, green peppers, and whole plum tomatoes. And finally, cheese – and lots of it! Baked upside-down and served right-side-up, it’s a pizza like no other — comforting, indulgent, and uniquely Chicago.

With a repertoire spanning more than seven genres, Soul 2 The Bone brings a vibrant mix of Motown, R&amp;B, Pop, Light Rock, Neo-Soul, Jazz, and more. Their lively performances are all about creating a fun, memorable experience for audiences. The beloved Jeanie B! Trio will perform a free children’s concert on Saturday, September 19th at 10 am in the Community Center of First Congregational Church of Evanston at 1417 Hinman Avenue. 
Jeanie B’s interactive performances are always jam-packed with silliness, dancing, and sing-a-longs. And, with a vast catalogue of original music that Illinois Entertainer notes, features a surprising “mix of country, folk, blues rock, and a pinch of punk,” this is one children’s concert that promises to entertain kids and their parents. It’s no wonder that Time Out Chicago praises Jeanie B’s music as “one of the best things to happen to children in Chicago this decade!” 
This event is free and open to all. Kid-friendly snacks will be provided.
